I am the Nth Generation – James Makil

Learn more about Nth's most important asset – its people in our "I am the Nth Generation" series.

What’s your job title? vCISO and Sr. Security Consultant

How many years have you been with Nth? Just over a year, since April 2022

What does a typical day for you at Nth look like? Engaging with my vCISO clients and supporting our sellers

Which fellow Nth’er(s) inspire you and why? Todd Burkhardt (Co-President, Client Engagement & CIO) and Jim Russ (VP, Enterprise Technology). Anyone that can be at a company for over 30 years has a certain level of discipline that is something to be admired.

What led you to this career/working at Nth? The security practice at Nth, proximity to my home and being local, conversations with Dan Molina (Co-President, Security & Marketing, CTO) and the founders (Rich & Jan Baldwin), the average tenure for employees, and of course the entire executive team choosing to give me a shot.

What is one of your favorite things about your job? The capacity to offer industry leading solutions after an assessment allows me to close gaps for clients in need.

What is a work accomplishment you are proud of? I’m still early in my tenure with Nth. Being able to knowledgeably support our sellers around cyber solutions is something I’m proud of.

What motivates you at work? The fact that I am surrounded by solution architects and security teammates that know and have more experience than me. Just trying to catch up and further develop my skillsets.

What is one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned in your career? Building meaningful relationships is vital to building a business.

What was your first job? Cashier at McDonald's

What is the best career advice you’ve received? Work hard and smart.

What is your favorite place that you’ve travelled to? St. George, Utah

What is your favorite movie and/or book? My favorite movie is Gladiator which came out in 2000 starring Russell Crowe.

Describe your ideal weekend. Usually spent riding my e-bike, finding some unique foods, and if I’m up for it, I try to throw in a longer than usual meditation session.

What famous person or historical figure would you most like to meet and why? Mahatma Gandhi. Anger, irritation, frustration, etc. are very difficult to control and with that, responding to situations rather than reacting is extremely difficult. I would have loved to pick his brain on how he was able to develop his thoughts and ideas on Ahimsa (non-violence).

What 3 items would you bring with you to a deserted island? Prayer beads, and two books – Paramahansa Yogananda’s commentary on both the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible.

What is your perfect meal? Masala dosa, coconut chutney and sambar (South Indian breakfast dishes that all go together)

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? Escargot

What do you like to do for fun? Travelling and visiting new places, trying different foods, and driving would make the top three list.

What was your first concert? First cassette tape? First CD? My first concert was Kanye West – The College Dropout tour in 2004. My first cassette tape was Guns and Roses – Use Your Illusion I in 1991. My first CD was Yanni Live at the Acropolis in 1994.
